Does anyone here know the exact date when the Gibson Snakepit Les Paul was released or announced?

I think it was some time in 1997 but don't know the month or day

Wow Attila. You've been researching the original Snakepit for a least 10 years now! I remember sending you pictures of mine from 6-7 years ago!  Here are my thoughts:

    -          There isn’t 1 “official” release date because it was not originally made to be sold in the open market.  Gibson wanted to custom make a few guitars for Slash.  This is why in most publications, it will say “1995-1996” as the birth of the “Snakepit”.  I can guess that Slash received the 1st prototype in 1995, but it wasn’t until 1996 where it became known to the public.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

    -          1996 can be assumed to be the “official” year of the release.  From my recollection (and from past history), the guitar was introduced at Winter NAMM in Anaheim California in Mid-January 1996.  NAMM (stand for “National Association of Music Merchants”).  The show is held 2x a year (summer and winter), but the winter one held in Anaheim (1 hour south of Los Angeles) is by far bigger and more important.  The winter show is always held for 4 days, at the same time of the 3-day weekend in January as celebrated in the U.S. (Martin Luther King Jr. Day). (that’s almost exactly 16 years ago).  Essentially, any and all music related products will be introduced here.

    -          This occurred almost exactly 16 years ago.  Can’t give you an exact date, but a good bet is January 11 - 14, 1996.

    -          By the way, one of the luthiers who built these is named Bruce Kunkel.  He’s left Gibson’s Custom Shop and has his own line of guitars.  Check him out:  www.kunkelguitars.com.  NOTE: Bruce is the luthier (builder) of the Snakepit, but I’m pretty sure there was another artist who did just the Snakepit logo carving who I believe has since passed away.

    Hope that helps  :-)
